“Local First” Campaign Seeks to Protect Delaware and Chester Counties Economy.

As gas prices rise and financial markets slip, a local business is hoping to insulate Delaware and Chester County’s economy with a multifaceted campaign to explain the benefits of keeping purchases close to home. The “Local First” campaign is a joint effort of locally owned small business entrepreneurs from Delaware and Chester County who partnered together to develop this business strategy for locally owned businesses in Delaware and Chester Counties.

The campaign utilizes a variety of media for advertising including Internet, television, radio, various newspapers, and through their web site GetLocalFirst.com promoting loyalty to Delaware and Chester County businesses. It will also include events such as "Lunch Local" and "Local First Day"  events featuring locally-owned, independent businesses.

The concept is simple, what is spent in our counties stays in our counties. Similar campaigns across the country have been widely successful.

The goal of the campaign is to “keep our dollars flowing in Delaware and Chester Counties” by taking advantage of the multiplier effect that translates dollars spent at locally owned businesses into additional local purchases that create more jobs, raise wages, and generate additional sales tax revenue for community services. The organizers of the campaign believe keeping dollars flowing in our counties can help businesses and their customers insulate their communities from the fallen national economy.

Local First, LLC has built a foundation for an ongoing education program. For example, business membership fees will help Local First, LLC not only buy various media, it will also help with the ongoing development of their two local business directories DelcoWeb.com and ChescoWeb.com local community portals and business directories that focus on locally owned businesses by featuring these businesses throughout the directories,  and bring residents and businesses together online with free tools and publishing rights for each to use to effectively communicate online in their communities. Also Local First. LLC has developed an online business to business networking site (LocalFirstNetwork.com) for its local business members to use to effectively communicate with other local businesses in their community.

Local First campaigns are part of a growing national movement emphasizing the "local first" message. In Bellingham, Washington, 58% of local residents said a similar campaign had impacted their buying habits.

"The efforts of the ‘Local First’ campaign will continue to improve our quality of life as we all benefit from purchases being made in our own community.” The developers say success will depend on everyone in our counties and that there are a number of ways to support the campaign. Business owners can purchase memberships or sponsorships to pool funds to pay for the cost of advertising, and residents can make sure to check first with local merchants before purchasing from the big box super chain stores, or driving outside of the county or shopping over the Internet. And telling a friend about the campaign and spreading the local first message is another easy way to help out.
